Creating an interior design mood board is an essential step in the design process. It helps you visualize concepts, communicate ideas to clients, and stay organized.

In this guide, weāll explore how to make a mood board for interior design, share tips and tricks, and discuss what to avoid for optimal results.
As an interior designer, I know the ins and outs of moodboards. I love to share all my knowledge. Let's get started!
Why Use an Interior Design Mood Board?
An interior design mood board is a digital or physical collage that captures the essence of a design concept. It includes colors, textures, furniture, lighting, and accessories to convey a cohesive vision.
I often use moodboards in my client presentations, as visuals for my website, and for my creativity in the design process.Ā
Hereās why mood boards are invaluable:
Clarity: They provide a clear visual representation of your ideas.
Consistency:Ā Ensures all design elements work harmoniously.
Efficiency: Saves time and reduces guesswork during project execution.
Collaboration: Acts as a communication tool for presenting ideas to clients or team members.
Digital mood boards, in particular, have gained popularity due to their ease of use and flexibility.Ā
Tools like Canva allow you to drag, drop, and adjust elements precisely, making them ideal for professionals and DIYers.
My favorite tools are Canva and Affinity Designer (as Adobe has gone crazy with its pricing and subscription models).

Steps to Create an Interior Design Project Board
It is quite a straightforward process to create and design a moodboard, but there are things to consider to make it a great visual for client presentations and as a guide for your creative process. The mood board is the "guide" that keeps your project cohesive. You don't want to get this part wrong!
Define the Project Scope
Start by understanding the purpose of your mood board. Are you redesigning a single room or an entire home? Is it for internal or external use? Identify the style, theme, and functional requirements of the space.
Gather Inspiration
Browse Pinterest, Instagram, and design blogs to collect inspiration. Save images of rooms, materials, and objects that resonate with your vision. Aim for a mix of aspirational and practical elements.
Choose Your Color Palette
Select a color scheme that aligns with your design goals. Use tools like Coolors to create harmonious palettes. A well-curated color palette sets the tone for the entire design. You can read more in my checklist if you need help with color selection.

Select Key Elements
Include essential design elements such as furniture, lighting, rugs, and decor. Ensure these choices reflect the style and function of the space. Use high-quality images to maintain a professional look.
Arrange the Layout
Organize your images on the mood board. Group similar items together to create a logical flow, and balance the composition with varying shapes, sizes, and textures.
For digital boards, layering and transparency can add depth. Remember to remove the picture's background for a more professional look if you use a digital mood board. If you have Canva Pro, this is an included feature, otherwise, you can use, among many great apps,Ā Remove.bg.
Pro tip: Add a modest shadow to your elements to make them pop and not flat. If you use Canva, it is easy to do! Edit the element and use the shadow tool! You get all the tips when you buy a product from me; I added the Canva for Interior designers ebook to sort everything out like a breeze.Ā
Add Labels and Notes
Include captions or labels to explain your choices. For example, note why a specific fabric is suitable or how a lighting fixture complements the overall design. I tend to add a "keyword" for the choice, like "Marble" or "Stripes" for ease. It looks cute too!
Review and Refine
Step back and evaluate your mood board. Is it cohesive? Does it capture the intended mood? Make adjustments as needed to perfect the presentation.

Tips and Tricks for Crafting the Perfect Mood Board
Be Selective: Avoid cluttering your board with too many elements. Less is often more.
Stay Consistent: Use a consistent style for your images. Mixing drastically different photography styles can be distracting.
Leverage Templates: Save time by using pre-designed digital templates that are customizable to your needs.
Use Realistic Images: Ensure the items you include are accessible within your budget and timeline.
Incorporate Textures: Add swatches of fabric or close-up images of materials to give depth and realism to your board.
What NOT to Do When Making an Interior Design Mood Board
Ignore the Clientās Needs
Failing to align your mood board with the clientās preferences can lead to miscommunication and dissatisfaction. Always prioritize their input. I know it is easy to get carried away in the design process, but restrain yourself and take a step back occasionally to evaluate the mood board.
Overcomplicate the Design
A mood board should simplify the design process, not overwhelm it. Too many elements can dilute the concept and make it hard to follow.
Use Low-Quality Images
Pixelated or low-resolution images reduce the professionalism of your mood board. Always source high-quality visuals (if you are going digitally of course).
Forget Functionality
A beautiful design that doesnāt consider practical needs is bound to fail. Ensure the elements on your mood board are both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
Neglect Updates
Mood boards are dynamic tools. Failing to update them as the project evolves can cause confusion and delays.
